​SYNOPSIS

Karen and Martha have worked hard to build and run an all-girls boarding school in a refurbished farmhouse. A malicious young girl named Mary starts a rumor that the two women are having a lesbian affair. With the help of Mary's doting and powerful grandmother, the rumor soon turns to scandal. Mary realizes the power that she wields and tenaciously sticks to her story, threatening to ruin Karen and Martha's school, relationships, careers, and lives.


Characters:

PEGGY ROGERS -a pupil at the Wright-Dobie School.
MRS. LILY MORTAR -an instructor at the Wright-Dobie School, Aunt of Martha Dobie, a "retired" actress. she is a plump, florid woman of forty-five with obviously touched-up hair
EVELYN MUNN -a pupil at the Wright-Dobie School. Twelve to fourteen years of age.
HELEN BURTON -a pupil at the Wright-Dobie School. Twelve to fourteen years of age.
LOIS FISHER -a pupil at the Wright-Dobie School. Twelve to fourteen years of age.
CATHERINE -a pupil at the Wright-Dobie School. Twelve to fourteen years of age.
ROSALIE WELLS -a pupil at the Wright-Dobie School and pawn of Mary Tilford. Twelve to fourteen years of age.
MARY TILFORD -a manipulative and willful pupil at the Wright-Dobie School. She is fourteen, neither pretty nor ugly. She is an undistinguished looking girl except for the sullenly dissatisfied expression on her face. Granddaughter of Amelia Tilford.
KAREN WRIGHT -co-founder of the Wright-Dobie School, engaged to Dr. Joe. Karen is an attractive woman of twenty-eight, casually pleasant in manner, without sacrifice of warmth or dignity
MARTHA DOBIE -co-founder of the Wright-Dobie School, Niece to Lily Mortar.
DOCTOR JOSEPH CARDIN -Fiancé to Karen Wright, he is a large, pleasant looking, carelessly dressed man of about thirty-five. He is a relation of Ameila and Mary Tilford.
AGATHA -Agatha is a sharp-faced maid to the Tilford household, no longer young, with a querulous voice.
MRS. AMELIA TILFORD -large, dignified woman in her sixties, with a pleasant strong face. She had helped Karen and Martha to start their school. Grandmother to Mary.
A GROCERY BOY
