The story of Sara Crewe, heiress to a large fortune, is enrolled at Miss Minchin's Select Seminary for Young Ladies in Victorian England. At first her life is happy, but news arrives that her father has died and her fortune is lost. Sara is forced to become a servant, living in an attic room, scrubbing cobblestones and washing cooking kettles. When a mysterious gentleman from India takes the house next door, some strange and curious things begin to happen.

Character Descriptions:‹Sara Crewe: About 10-13 years old. Very kind, thoughtful, intelligent, polite, observant and imaginative. Sara always has a positive attitude. She is very wealthy but she is also very generous. Everyone considers her a princess.Lottie: About 8-12 years old. One of Sara's classmates. Lottie is sweet and nice. Best friends with Alice. She likes Sara.Alice: About 8-12 years old. One of Sara's classmates. Alice is nice, and likeable. Best friends with Lottie. She likes SaraJessie: About 8-12 years old. One of Sara's classmates. Jessie is tough, very blunt and calls things as she sees them. Not afraid of Lavinia. She likes Sara.Lavinia: About 11-13 years old. She is conceited, snobby, and jealous of Sara, and dislikes her.Ermengarde: About 10-12 years old. Often is picked on by the other girls because she's gullible and easy to fool. She is very afraid of Miss Minchin, more afraid than the other girls. She likes Sara.Becky: About 12-14 years old. An orphan and a servant at the school. Becky becomes Sara's best friend.Miss Minchin: The headmistress of the boarding school. Very concerned with appearances, and money. Miss Minchin is unmarried, unkind, and phony. She resents Sara.Miss Amelia: Miss Minchin's sister. Amelia teaches and works at the school. She's very nice to the girls but she's afraid of her sister and never stands up to her.Cook: Works at Miss Minchin's school and is not very kind to Becky or Sara.Mr. Barrow: He is Captain Crewe's solicitor and responsible for Sara's money.Mrs. Carmichael: A neighbor that Miss Minchin invites over.Mr. Carmichael: Mrs. Carmichael's husband. He works for Mr. Carrisford.Mr. Carrisford: A wealthy neighbor of Miss Minchin's school. Mr. Carrisford is in poor health.Ram Dass: Indian servant of Mr. Carrisford who befriends Sara. Ram Dass is warm and kind.Perkins: Housemaid of Mr. Carrisford, friendly but slightly sarcastic. Can be any age.
