William Mutimer, artistic producing director for Northampton Community College's Summer Theatre program, has announced its third season line-up of musicals.
The schedule opens with 'In the Heights' for a two-week run beginning June 5.
The music and lyrics of the 2008 Tony "Best Musical" were written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, with a book by Quiara Alegría Hudes.
The story explores three days in the characters' lives in the New York City Latino neighborhood of Washington Heights and features an award-winning score with hip-hop, salsa, merengue and soul music.
'Falsettos' opens on June 19 for a two-week run.
The award-winning musical features a book by James Lapine and music and lyrics by William Finn.
It is the story of a father, mother, and son as they prepare for his Bar Mitzvah.
Add their psychiatrist, the father’s lover and some very good friends and this story grabs the heart strings as it sings.
'Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story' will begin a two-week run on July 3 (with a special picnic and performance on July 4).
This bio-musical about the legendary Buddy Holly covers his start in the music business and his challenges in the music industry, and features Matt McClure as Buddy. McClure has been featured in this iconic role in numerous productions around the country.
The children's show, 'The Perfect Dog', is inspired by New York Times’ best-selling author (and National Dog Show host), John O’Hurley’s book, The Perfect Dog.
Sam, a twelve-year old perfectionist, searches for a flawless dog to enter in the town’s dog contest.
Unable to find a canine that measures up, Sam must resort to training the family dog, Max, who is less than eager to obey commands.
It opens on July 10 for a four-week run. A portion of the ticket sales from this show will be donated to Animals in Distress, a no-kill shelter located in Coopersburg.
The 2019 season concludes with 'Jesus Christ Superstar', the rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice.
The story is loosely based on the Gospels' accounts of the last week of Jesus's life, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem and ending with the crucifixion. The two-week run begins on July 24.
Auditions for the shows were held earlier this year, and included local auditions as well as recruiting at professional theatre auditions in New York City.
“I am very excited for NCC’s summer program to bring our unique vision to these shows. They are among my favorites and I’m excited to share these stories with our audiences,” said Mutimer, artistic producing director of the program, who created NCC's program in the summer of 2017.
The program offers an affordable option to local audiences, featuring performances by a company of professional actors and local performers.
The local performers – many of high school- and college age – learn from the professionals, and all have the opportunity to network with peers.
