Northampton Community College’s Summer Theatre program concludes its second season with 'Dreamgirls', the Tony-winning musical that follows the story of a female trio, a la The Supremes, on their path to super-stardom.

Based on the show business aspirations and successes of R&B acts such as The Supremes, The Shirelles, James Brown, and others, the musical follows the story of a young female singing trio from Chicago called "The Dreams", who become music superstars.

'Dreamgirls' opened on Broadway on December 20, 1981, and ran for 1521 performances.

The musical was nominated for 13 Tony Awards, winning six, and was later adapted into a 2006 motion picture.

NCC's production features a cast of local performers and professional actors from across the country, including several FREDDY award winners and nominees.

“The score is full of big numbers with tight harmonies and energetic choreography, and it's a very entertaining show," said Bill Mutimer, Producing Artistic Director of the Summer Theatre program, and director of the show.

"The story itself explores all the ups and downs of the entertainment world, especially in a white, male-dominated industry. Unfortunately those challenges have not changed dramatically since this show debuted 35 years ago."

'Dreamgirls'' music was written by Henry Kreiger, with lyrics and book by Tom Eyens, who was honored with a Tony for his work.

Director Michael Bennett (director and choreographer of A Chorus Line) also received a Tony, and he shared another Tony for the show's choreography with Michael Peters, who choreographed Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and "Beat It" videos.

'Dreamgirls' runs July 25-Aug. 5 in NCC's Lipkin Theatre at its main campus, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem.

Performances will be offered Wednesday-Saturday evenings at 8 p.m., with two Sunday matinees at 3 p.m.
