Enchanted Bookshop Character Descriptions
MARGIE (F / Adult) Margie is the owner of the bookshop. She has a big heart, wild imagination, tendency to be scatterbrained, and is eternally hopeful that things will turn around for her failing bookshop. Her passion and enthusiasm for reading comes across very clearly with anybody she talks to.
BOMBALURINA (F / 5-9) Margie’s pet cat who likes to steal things and cause trouble. The cat is very much a physical comedy character with lots of facial expressions and gestures.
EDDIE (M / Adult): A jewelry smuggler who likes to be the boss and thinks he’s a lot cleverer than he really is.
FINGERS (M or F / 16-Adult): Eddie’s partner, still learning and has the habit of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.
OFFICER KETCHUM (M or F / Adult): The local police officer who gets confused very easily and mixes up his/her words every time they talk.
LADY IN RED (F / 18-Adult): Mysterious woman who is trying to smuggle a secret book into the bookstore. She may also be doubling as a storybook character.
MOM (F / Adult): Bored customer who isn’t really interested in books and is not strict with her son. She may also be doubling as a storybook character.
TIMMY (M / 10-15): Her son who plays videos games and hates reading books. He may be doubling as a storybook character.
DOROTHY (F / 15-16): Beloved Kansas farm girl. She has a spunky, clever, and fearless personality. Tends to be the one the other storybook characters look to when making decisions.
TOTO (M or F / 5-9): Dorothy’s pet companion that follows her everywhere. Likes to bark and chase the cat all the time though he/she isn’t as brave as they think they are. It’s a good simple role for a young actor/actress who is new to stage acting.
ROBIN HOOD (M / 18-Adult): Classic medieval outlaw. He has the tendency to be impatient but is very brave, carries a bow, and is always ready to take down a criminal.
SHERLOCK HOLMES (M / 18-Adult): The brainy English detective. He talks very proper, always follows the rules, and uses a lot of big words when he talks that nobody understands.
POLLYANNA (F / 12-15): New England schoolgirl. She likes to be the show-off when talking and is annoyingly optimistic about everything.
TOM SAWYER (M / 10-12): A Mischievous Southern schoolboy. He doesn’t like following rules, carries his slingshot everywhere, and likes to cause trouble.
HEIDI (F / 10-12): Young Swiss mountain girl. She’s very melodramatic about everything and blends her words a lot when she talks. This actress will need to talk in a mishmash of German/English language. We will have somebody to help to learn this.
BOOK FAIRY (18-Adult): The one who brings the book characters to life. She has a whimsical personality though she can be overbearing a lot of the time and sticks by the book with rules.
LONG JOHN SILVER (M / 15-Adult): An English pirate w/ a peg leg and a parrot on his shoulder. Takes things that aren’t his and is treacherous to deal with.
FAGIN (M / 14-Adult): A pickpocket who is very sneaky and always up for making a bargain.
DOCTOR DOLITTLE (M / 14-Adult): A veterinarian with the ability to talk to animals always likes to give his opinion on everything no matter what the situation.
HOPALONG CASSIDY (M / 15 & up): Noble cowboy from the West who is very good at swinging a lasso.
WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST (F /18-Adult): Dorothy’s enemy who still wants the ruby red slippers. She tends to be a smart aleck when spoken to.
QUEEN OF HEARTS (F / 18-Adult): The ruler of Wonderland; she has a temper, plays croquet, and likes to chop off people’s heads.
FRANKENSTEIN (M / 16-Adult): Scary monster that grunts a lot; will likely double as another storybook character or stage crew.
