At the end of the first act of "All Shook Up" the musical currently running at Northampton Community College's Summer Theatre, the woman sitting next to me made a comment as she saw me taking notes.
I told her I was writing a review, and she said "Well, I want to let you know, I love it!"
Apparently, the audience at the Sunday matinee performance agreed with her!
"All Shook Up", a musical Elvis blast from the past and like the movie "Footloose", brings song, dance and love into a 1950s community that has been repressed by their conservative mayor sincerely played by Shannon Felletter with her quiet but lovesick Sheriff, Josh Crowley.
Max Wetherhold engages the audience tenaciously as the young roustabout Chad, who motorcycles into the small town where his mere presence begins to stir things up.
Natali, the daughter of an auto mechanic winningly played by Gabrielle Hondorf, is immediately attracted to Chad who cant see beyond her grease-monkey job of working with her dad Jim, a wonderfully appealing Danny Melo. She uses this to her advantage, pushing aside Dennis, the believably nerdy Mason Wold, and transforms herself into Chads new side-kick Ed.
Chad has his sights set on librarian Miss Sandra, played by Jordan Gold. Golds vocally powerful performance is energizing, as are her various dresses with matching shoes!
The mother/daughter duo of Sylvia and Lorraine are beautifully portrayed by Nikki Cohen and Myriam Zamy. Their voices are captivatingly strong.
In this one crazy night, romance blooms as the town rallies to ignore the mayors fuddy-duddy ways, including her son Dean, who falls in love with "a colored girl against his mothers wishes. Dean is well portrayed by Jacob Greening.
Elvis tunes such as "Don't be Cruel", "Heartbreak Hotel", "It's Now or Never", "Blue Suede Shoes" and many more are woven throughout the two-and-a-half-hour production. The finale "Burning Love" was especially well done. Director Bill Mutimer has elicited a bravura performance from a vastly entertaining troupe of young talent.
The cast is rounded out by the ensemble of Townspeople: Janae Gray, Andy Van Antwerp, Justin Ferguson, Cade Kocher, Marcell Mckenzie, Amanda Alfano, Faith Stack, Jane Lui, Jennifer Brady, Lydia Walker, Tessa DeJesus, Connor Sternberg, Aidan King, Isaiah Elleby, Michael J. Sheridan, and Sieanna Rahatt, who all help make this production triumphant.
The simple set, designed by Brett Oliveira is brought to life by the acrobatic and energetic dancing, choreographed by Tina Williams.
