E.B. Whites book, 'Charlottes Web', was called œthe best American childrens book of the last two hundred years by the Childrens Literature Association.
Although we cannot know all the elements that went into that accolade, we know that the humanity and enduring principles woven through the tapestry of that childrens book populated by animals and one remarkable spider had to be high on the list.
Dutch Country Players is bringing that childrens book to life through Joseph Robinettes adaptation for the stage.
Wilbur is a lonely, friendless pig who reaches out to Charlotte a very talented spider and finds a true friend. All the elements that make this story great kick into action when Wilbur realizes that come Christmas he will be the main course for dinner.
Wilbur doesnt want to die. So, Charlotte, Templeton the rat, and Fern, the farm girl who understands what animals are saying, band together to find a way to save Wilbur from being Christmas dinner.
Along this road to porcine salvation we see what can be wrought when promises are made and kept, when usually incompatible beings work in cooperation to accomplish a goal and miracles become expected.
'Charlottes Web' is a story about the continuation of life and friendship. Narrator 2 eloquently captures this as he ends the play with œWilbur knew that being friends means that no matter where life takes you, you carry a piece of that friendship with you. Then you pass it on!
DCP will present 'Charlottes Web' on Saturday, October 6 and Sunday, October 7 at 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. Come and be captured in Charlottes miraculous web.
