Shawnee on Delaware, PA – Of Mice and Men opens February 16, 2019, and runs through February 24, 2019, at the Shawnee Playhouse.
Adapted from John Steinbeck’s own classic novel of the same name, the play hauntingly follows George and Lennie, California migrant workers searching for a better life during the Great Depression.
The unlikely and protective friendship between the two resonates as they strive for the American dream.
Their dependence on one another is the strength and the weakness of the relationship.
Recognized as a masterpiece of literature, the relevance of the story still rings true today.
Director Gillian Turner has found that the show’s story has a powerful message that can cross generations and statuses.
“I hope that audiences will consider that the toughest choices we make as human beings are the ones that involve the ones we love.” she relates.
“Love is a choice and with that come some choices fraught with complications in regards to where we end and begin with another person---platonically or romantically.
"Ultimately, I want audiences to remember that love is a choice and one that requires conscious effort with any and all people involved.”
The cast is led by Angelo Revilla (George) who was last seen in Rebel Stages’ production of Romeo & Juliet as Benvolio.
His sidekick (Lennie) in the production is played by Daniel Manasoui, a senior at East Stroudsburg High School South.
The remainder of the cast includes: Abigail Witt, Matthew Namik, Dan Eash, Stephen Hellman, Patrick Turner, Tamir Cousins-Ali, Dan Luddeni, Chris Perdomo and Justin Fenner.
“Steinbeck, is one of the quintessential American authors.” says Director Gillian Turner.
“This story deals with themes that are American in nature: the fragility of dreams, friendship, loyalty, prejudice.
"It deals with the Everyman character in George, his foil of innocent yet destructive Lennie, sweet Candy and his old dog, and all of the other men that are trying to figure out how to be a part of something while also remaining true to themselves.
"It grapples with loneliness juxtaposed with loyalty, and we all wrestle with these forms of human existence, sometimes on a daily basis.”
